Are you ready, Chequamegon Bay? It's that time of year again. Deep Water Grille is pairing a full course meal with South Shore Brewery's sustainably brewed beer. Freshest beer in the Great Nort' because it's brewed on-site in our pilot brewery nestled in the historic L.C. Willmarth building with "the Deep". So what's on the menu?​
  • First Course: Foie Gras Boudin arancini, smoked heirloom tomato coulis with green onion. Paired with our Nut Brown Ale.
  • Second Course: Butter poached crawfish, watercress, candied pecan, pickled okra and grilled peach vinaigrette. Paired with our Cheq Pilsener.

  • Third Course: Cajun seared red snapper, grilled shrimp, boar bacon red beans and rice, and blood orange hollandaise. Paired with our WPA: Wisconsin Pale Ale.
  • Fourth Course: Sous-vide pork belly, fried oyster, alligator hush puppies remoulade, giardiniera relish, micro greens. Paired with Sugar Shack Maple Amber.
  • Fifth Course: Scotch Ale bienget, malt powder sugar, praline ice cream, coffee mint stout caramel. Paired with our Bourbon Barrel Coffee Mint Stout.

Fermented Forest Series: Applefest Ale by Bizy Does It.

Applefest Ale 6.25% ABV

Inspired by Bayfield’s renowned Apple Festival, which is celebrated with extraordinary fanfare. South Shore Brewery adds to the fanfare with the Applefest Ale, which honors those diligent folks that call our Bayfield peninsula their home, especially those who have chosen an agricultural way of life. Combining the flavors and aromas of locally produced honey, apple cider, and specialty malts, we have produced one of the most unique products, to be sure. Because of the generous amounts of honey, the special maturation process with the apple cider, and the unique flavors of malt, this brew is indefinable in conventional beer terms. It has characteristics of beer, mead, and champagne. Our brewer encourages you to cellar a bottle or two for special occasions.

Vieille Pomme Ale 8.2% ABV

Brewed last September in the form of our Applefest Ale, this ale has transformed into something quite spectacular. Vieille Pomme (Old Apple) starts off just like any other batch of Applefest ale, with loads of local honey and fresh apple cider. After primary fermentation, the real fun began. We back sweetened this batch with more local honey then split it into two. Half of it making its way into Heaven Hills Bourbon Barrels with a strain of Brettanomyces, and the other half remaining in a secondary fermenter with an English cider strain. After aging for about 8 months we blended the two back together. The resulting ale has big notes of tart apple, cherry, and some barnyard funk on the nose. The light body of this ale gives way to wonderful hints of apple, light cherry, a spiciness, and a very small hint of oakiness followed by the warming sensation of bourbon. This ale finishes very dry and slightly tart. Very limited amount of this beer will be available, so grab some while you can, you won’t want to miss out!

Food Truck

To help us celebrate, the Island Eats Food Truck will be parked at our Taphouse ready at 2pm to serve their delicious menu.

"We are a food truck and catering business. The produce we grow on our island farm and greenhouse is incorporated into menu items making for delicious, local food! Visit us on the island or check out our food truck calendar and find us at various Chequamegon Bay locations. We believe in growing locally, eating locally, and feeding locally."

Live Music

The Spruce Tones from Iron River will starting around 8pm until 10pm. The Spruce Tones are playing their blend of rock, blues, country, Celtic, and original music. Band member, Jon Hamilton, is a proud supporter of South Shore Brewery and produces the White Winter hard cider we now have at the Taphouse.

We're bringing the beer! South Shore Brewery will be at the finish-line party tent again this year. A heated tent will be set up there for the post-race chili feed, beer and soda, music and awards.

Drinking our beer is OBVIOUSLY the better way to replace all those spent calories.

ABout the Event

This winter, we’re preparing for as many as 4,000 skiers. We’ve got a great group of hundreds of volunteers who do everything from stuffing bags to making food to freezing luminaries to lighting candles to designing t-shirts to building bonfires to grooming the course. Come on up north and join us February 17, 2018, for the twenty-second annual Book Across the Bay!
Book Across the Bay is the upper Midwest's most unique winter event, open to skiers and snowshoers of all ages and ability levels. The 10-kilometer course, which is groomed for both classic-style and skate skiing, starts in Ashland and ends in Washburn, and follows a route not on land, but over the frozen surface of Lake Superior, the world's largest lake. The event is held at night, and the course is lit by the stars above and up to 1,000 candles in ice luminaries that line the entire route.

Winter in northern Wisconsin is long, dark and cold. Come late February, those residents of the Chequamegon Bay* region who haven't gone off to find sun and sanity somewhere down south can get a little stir crazy. Around the holiday season in 1996, a group of people got together to talk about how to make the winter a little more bearable by giving ourselves and our neighbors something to look forward to in our own backyards. Now, we share our backyard event with friends in 7 countries!

Noble Sound System boast a hard working, well rehearsed, original reggae act that relies heavily on their natural chemistry and smooth flowing vocal harmonies. The three members grew up together and still reside on Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula. Dane Hauser (Drums, Vocals) and Marlin Ledin (Bass, Vocals) had been performing together for nearly twenty years when they hooked up with Noble Falconer (Guitar, Vocals). The result was instant dub magic, and since their first show in the winter of 2016 they’ve been filling the areas venues to the brim. Noble Sound System bring great vibes, respect to the music, and a professional work ethic to the scene while making some of the tightest, most progressive reggae in Wisconsin. The band forges ahead with their heads up, confident in their ability to shake the room and raise your consciousness.
